Yes, you read it right. Shoprite has 1kg biltong worth R1000 on their shelves. We do not know why this particular biltong is so expensive, perhaps it is made from the lamb of God.

A lot of people have taken to social media to express their shock at the price set by ShopRite on this biltong.
"Shoprite ere tlwaela masepa" said one Facebook user. Which is translated to "Shoprite is disrespecting us!"

Other people believe that maybe biltong prices hiked to such a ridiculous price due to lockdown.

"Maybe biltong making firms do not have enough staff or any staff at all to produce more biltong due to lock down, therefore biltong is now in demand and that's why it is so expensive!" Said another user.

The biltong worth R1000 on ShopRite shelves is named Kalahari Biltong. The packaging is also written beef BBQ.

"We do not know what kind of beef costs R1000 per hundred grams. Maybe it is beef from one of Cyril Ramaphosa's farms where cows on those farms cost millions" said one individual on Facebook.

Another person simply said "Maybe the Biltong is made from cows that grew up in a loving household with both parents, went to private school and was taken for counseling before being slaughtered. Which is why it is so expensive."

After seeing the pictures, would you be willing to pay R1000 for 1kg of Biltong?
