Informal settlements are nothing new in South Africa. We have tons of them all around the country and  they come as no surprise.

But one particular settlement in Johannesburg came as a shock to everyone.

The settlers of this informal settlement have built their shacks directly ontop of train tracks.
It is not yet clear if the tracks are no longer in use or if the train operations have been stopped due to lockdown.  Other people believe that maybe this was the only available land they could occupy.

It is alleged that their previous shacks were destroyed on another land they had occupied illegally. And then they decided to settle on the train tracks.

This is arguably the most dangerous location they could have chosen because soon rather than later, these shacks will be destroyed too. Either by the law or the trains using those tracks if they will be operating after Lockdown.
